This photo taken 1992 on a one day trip to Mahala Mullins cabin. On the way we passed the house where Ruth Johnson was born. From left to right is my wife Betty Goins, Ruth Johnson, Jack Goins, Elbert and Dorthy Odell and Evelyn McKinley Orr, her husband John Orr took the photo. If you haven't already, be sure to read Ruth Johnson book " My Melungeon Heritage."  It is a true story about her life growing up on Newman Ridge. Evelyn Orr a Goins descendant headed up the Gowen Research team for the Gowen Research Foundation of Lubbock, Texas. This was a great day spent on Newman Ridge, and lunch with Dorthy and Elbert Odell. Another day we visited my birthplace about 8 miles east in Fishers Valley and had a picnic at the spring on the old Henry Jackson and William Fisher place. My father McKinley Goins owned this place in 1937.
