Question:

What was the age of Martha when her mother died? With whom and where did she live after her mother’s death?

Answer:

Martha was eight days old when her mother died. She lived just across the river from Mr. Saml Williams some 8 or 9 years, with her aunt Elizabeth Bolton. They moved from that neighborhood to Kelly’s ferry and lived there one year. They then went West and I have recently learned that they have been living in Illinois. Martha’s mother on her deathbed gave her to Elizabeth and asked her to raise the child for her.

Where did your parents reside at the time of your first recollection-give the County and state?

Answer:
They resided in Pendleton Dist. In the state of South Carolina.

Where did they move to from that place

Answer:
To Blunt County Tennessee

Question:
How many years ago?

Answer:
About 40 years ago

Question:
How long did you reside in that County

Answer:
Seven or eight years

Question:
Where did you move to from that County?

Answer:
We moved to the Hiwassee District about 6 miles above the mouth of the Hiwassee River.

Question:
How long did you live there and where did you move to from that place?

Answer:
I can’t say how long we lived there, perhaps five years. We then moved below Kelly’s ferry in Marion County Tennessee. I married then. Then I and husband moved to Alabama and stayed there two years and then moved to Blunt County. My father still resided in Marion County about Col. Oats.
