DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN MAYO 1768-1840's

Reuben Mayo born ca. 1773 came to Hawkins County, Tennessee circa 1827, Reuben married Jenet "Jane" McCallister b. 1778 in NC, they were married 4 Jan 1798 in Washington County, Va., the minister was N. Regan. The parents of Reuben Mayo and Janet McCallister are unknown. (Source: Washington County Virginia taxes 1811-1815.) The 1813 tax list of the upper district of Washington County list Reuben Mayo 1 tithe, which means Reuben was over 16 (tithes were male’s 16 or over) also, 1814 same district, Reuben Mayo 1 tithe- 0 slaves- 3 horses.

On the 18 day of August, 1811, Reuben Mayo purchased 100 acres from Andrew Sifer for $400.00 cash in hand, deed described the location as being on Turkey Gap Creek, corner to Cornlious Dewees, lying on both sides of Turkey Gap Creek to the
foot of Spring Mountain, Washington County, Virginia, deed book 4, page 463. Then on September 15, 1821, Reuben bought 100 acres from John Cifers described as being in Poor Valley, beginning on a spruce pine in Turkey Creek corner to Cornlious
Dewee’s survey. Turkey Gap Creek is only about two miles in length from its point of beginning to where it empties into the North Fork of the Holston River. Present day this area is in Smith County, Virginia, near the border of Washington County about eight miles east of Saltville Virginia.



On the 13 day of October 1827, Reuben and Jane (Janet) Mayo sold their farm on Turkey Creek to Joseph L. Trigg, described as lying on the waters of the North Fork of the Holston River. After selling their farm on Turkey Gap Creek, Reuben and his
family moved to the Stanley Valley area of Hawkins County, Tennessee. This area was established through census records. Reuben Mayo lived between William Looney  and John Young.

Most of this land around Turkey Gap Creek was a very rocky terrain. It is possible Reuben worked at the salt mines near Saltville, Virginia, which was only eight miles west of Turkey Run Creek.

Reuben Mayo recorded his Will in Hawkins County on 10 Jan. 1839; executors were Andrew Mayo and John Looney, (Hawkins County Will Book 1 page 357). Children named in this Will were as follows: youngest son Andrew, Grandson Reuben, son of
Nelson (Charles Nelson ?), oldest son John Mayo, son *Richard P. Mayo. The daughters of Reuben Mayo named in his Will include, Elizabeth Harliss, Polly
Hagood, Sally Hagood, Ann Shoults, Jane Mayo, Rachell Mayo, Matilda Ann Mayo, and wife Jane Mayo.
Reuben Mayo was still living when the 1840 US Census was taken, listed as between 70 and 80 yrs., wife Jane was between 60 and 70. Jane was living with her son Andrew Mayo on the 1860 census, age given was 90 yrs. Reuben’s wife Jane McCallister Mayo gave her birthplace as North Carolina on the 1860 federal census.

The four sons, and their spouses, of Reuben and Janet McCallister Mayo include the following: ( note, using census average for age) Andrew Mayo b. 1818 in Washington County, Virginia, married Ann (unknown. They had the following known children, Annis b. 1854, James b.1856, William b. 1858, and Reuben b. 1859.
Andrew then married Margaret, their children were, Mary, John, Nancy Ann and Thomas. Thomas married Mary Jane Cross, their children James Walter, William daughters Pearl, Sue, Gladys and Martha Ann. Martha Ann Mayo married George Mayo, son of Nancy Armenia Mayo.

Charles Nelson Mayo, son of Reuben and Jane McCallister Mayo, was born in Washington County, Virginia, ca. 1814. He married Libbey; she died 1883 of Small Pox. Children born to them were, Catherine b. 1833, Rachel b.1835, Reuben b. 1837, Ann b. 1838, Malinda b. 1840, Nancy b. 1842, Anderson b.1844, Jessee b.1846, Robert b. 1848, Mary b. 1849, Emaniel b.1850, and Julie b. 1858.

Susan Ann Mayo, daughter of Charles Nelson and Libbey Mayo was born in 1838, died in Hawkins County 1883, of Small Pox, married Gurth Beckner, their children were James Mack Beckner b. March, 1866, Kite Road, died 1883, Kite Road, of Small pox. Charles Nelson Beckner born 20 June 1869, died Oct 3, 1941, in Johnson County, Indiana. Sarah Annie Beckner b. 1870, Kite Road, d. 1883 of Small Pox, Maggie Jane Beckner, b May 3, 1877, Kite Road, (she had Small Pox in 1883 but lived), died June 12, 1952 in Johnson County, Indiana. Christopher Semons Beckner b. July 1, 1878, Kite Road, died Sept 20, 1960 in Johnson County, Indiana, he also had Small pox in 1883.

Prior to this marriage Susan Ann Mayo had a son John Luther Miller, later he took his mothers maiden name. He was b. Aug 27, 1857, near Cold Springs in Hawkins County, Tennessee, died May 6, 1938, in Johnson County, Indiana. He married Margaret Ellen Wells on Oct 24, 1886, she was b. May 28, 1852, d. Mar 8, 1892, buried in New Providence Cemetery. Their children were, Luther George Mayo b. Aug 12, 1887, died Nov 26, 1945 in Johnson County, Indiana, William Robert Mayo b. April 5, 1889, in Hawkins County, died Aug 25, 1969 in Owen County, Indiana, and daughter Nancy Elizabeth Mayo b. Feb 1, 1891, Hawkins County, died March 1977. William R. Mayo b April 5, 1889 Hawkins County, d. Aug 25, 1969, Owen County Indiana, m. Clara Myrtle Mayo, b. March 18, 1888, died Oct 13, 1968. Their Children were, John Robert Mayo b. 1914, d 1935, Infant Mayo, a girl, b. March 8, 1917, Hawkins County, buried Markham Cemetery. George Jacob Mayo b. April 29, 1918, died July 12, 1990, Ralph Emanual Mayo b Jan 29, 1921. Infant Mayo, a girl, b. and d. Dec 4, 1923, buried Carters Valley Cemetery beside
Haze Mayo. Charles Christopher Mayo b May 13, 1928 in Hawkins County. Harley Wayne Mayo, b. July 6, 1925, is the one who furnished this information on the family of Charles Nelson Mayo. Harley Mayo’s children are, Charlotte Jacob, Christina Osborne, Barbara Kerner, and Wayne Mayo.

John Mayo named in the Will of Reuben Mayo, as oldest son, was born in Washington County, Virginia. about 1800. In January 1838 John Mayo was fined in Hawkins County Court for manufacturing whiskey without a permit. He married Louisa Young b 1815 in Virginia, their 12 children were; Francis b 1823, Sarah Jane and Mary Ann (Polly), twins, b. 1827, in Tennessee, Margaret b. 1831 in Tennessee, Malvina b. 1833 in Tennessee, William b 1836 in Tennessee, Harlan b, 1836 Tennessee, Louisa b. 1836, Martha Ann b 1836 in Tennessee, Emeline b. Missouri, 1849, Rachel born Missouri, Rufus, born Missouri. Note: Dave Mayo of Ironton, Missouri who furnished this information was the son of Frank Mayo, who was the son of John R. Mayo, son of Francis Mayo born 1823.

 * Richard P. Mayo, son of Reuben and Janet McCallister Mayo, was b. ca. 1810 in Washington County, Virginia, died before 1870. Richard married Elizabeth Mauk b. 1810. Died ca 1875. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Mauk Sr. born ca 1777, in Virginia, died about 1875 Hawkins County, TN, married Sarah uknown about 1805, Sarah born 1780’s, died August 1855. John Mauk Sr.  dates of birth, marriage and death is based on census averages. He was recorded age 93 and living with Granddaughter Nancy Mayo and daughter Elizabeth Mayo on 1870 Census of Hawkins County, Tennessee. Known children of  John and Sarah Mauk SR. were: 1-Elizabeth , Married Richard Mayo, (children listed next paragraph).* 2-John Mauk Jr, b Jan 1, 1820, died April 19, 1855, married Martha born Aug 6, 1822, died Sept 27, 1891, they were the parents of seven children; Nathan, Nancy Ann, George Wells, Andrew, Benjamin Henry, Sarah Catherine and Julia.  2-Sarah Mauk daughter of John Sr. married Elijah Walters, unknown daughter who married John Vaughn.* (HW Chancery Court 1857- John Mauk Sr vs Martha Mauk)

 

James Mayo, son of Richard and Elizabeth Mauk Mayo, was b. August 5, 1849, married Elizabeth Bateman, daughter of William and Mary Ellen Bateman, their children were Robert, Lula, and Cordelia b. May 4, 1870, who married Elijah Keirsey,
b. 1862. Their daughter Delia b August 16, 1899, died Nov 7, 1972, married Robert Eugene Mayo. Several members of this family are buried at Armstrong / Amis Cemetery.

Nancy Armenia Mayo b. 1832 was the Daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Mauk Mayo, she had the following children: ( source 1870 census.) Haze H. b. 1856, Sarah Annis b. 1861, George b. 1865, James b. 1869, Tennessee “Lina” b.1872. They are listed below with known spouses.

Sarah Annis (Little Mammy) Mayo b, 1861, married Andy Armstrong, 3 Jan 1885, she had one daughter Annie, and one son Robert Clint Armstrong b. 1885 d. 1952 who married Cora Helen Barrett, 14 March 1909 (Cora d/0 Samuel Barrett and a Davidson, info from Shirley Watson) their family includes sons Charles, Murrell, and Clinton Jr., and daughters Willie b 1919 never married, she died March 29, 1996. Maria married Jim Hammonds they were the parents of two children Barbara and Wayne. Daughter Barbara.Hammonds married Wayne Hawkins and had children Barbara and Wayne. A son Ronald married Linda, who died then married 2nd to Barbara. Charles Armstrong, b. 17 Oct 19? He married Thelma Porter. they had two sons Gary and Randall. Murrell Armstrong s/o Robert and Cora Armstrong is buried in Florida wife name Betty one child Kenneth Armstrong.

George Mayo b. 1865 d. 1953 married Martha Ann Mayo (Martha Ann Mayo daughter of Thomas and Mary Jane Cross Mayo.) Some of their children were, Laura Mayo b. 1890 d. 1984 and Robert Eugene born 2 Oct 1902. Laura married Charlie Cox b. 1881 d. 1947; they had one daughter Ethel Cox who married Wiley Way. Laura and Charlie Cox also raised Ruby; she was the daughter of Pearl Mayo Mallory.
Pearl was Laura Cox sister; she also had a son Hagen. Robert Eugene Mayo son of George and Martha Ann Mayo was b Oct 2, 1902, d. March 27, 1981 married Delia Kersey born 16 August 1899. Delia was the daughter of Elijah Kersey and Cordelia Mayo. Children of Robert Eugene and Delia Kersey Mayo were George Dallas b.1935, d. Aug 8, 2002. Dallas married Delores Peters, children Rhonda Robinson and Melissa Moore. Other children of Robert and Deliah Kersey Mayo were Bill Mayo, Helen Liddle and Ruby Sandidge.

James Wiley Mayo b. March 14, 1869, d. March 13, 1944. Married three times, first married a Dixon they had one daughter Izzy who married Charlie Gatewood, their children were Gladys and Garnie Gatewood. After the death of his first wife James Wiley Mayo married Mary Kirby from Knoxville, Tennessee. They had sons Chad, Hugh and George H. Mayo b October 16, 1895 d Oct 24, 1927, George daughter Mattie Sue b. April 23, 1927 was thrown from a horse and died from that injury Feb 3, 1946. James Wiley Mayo and Mary Kirby had three daughters, Lou never married, Ruth died young, and Artis b 1915 married Joe Simmons son of Isaac and Matilda Simons. Joe and Artis had two children Shirley and Randall Simmons. After the death of his second wife Mary Kirby, James Wiley Mayo married Ida Sandidge Mayo, widow of Robert J (Bob) Mayo, they had one daughter Dana b April 25, 1924, Dana married Charlie Case.

Tennessee "Lina" Mayo b 1870, daughter of Nancy, married Thomas Bailey in 1892.
Children: Lillie Bailey Sams b April 12, 1893, d March 22, 1983; Wilburn Bailey b Dec 1, 1894; Annie Bailey Sandidge b March 4, 1897; Stella Bailey b Nov 28, 1900; Ethel Bailey Hurd b Nov 4, 1903, d April 30, 1993; Sallie Lou Bailey Boyd b. Nov 13, 1905; Willie Lee Bailey Amis b Oct 19, 1910, d July 23, 1985; Bobbie Ester Bailey Rutledge b April 8, 1914. Thomas Bailey obituary: Thomas was born in Hawkins County 16 June 1873, died at Community Hospital Kingsport, Tennessee 22 Feb 1938, spouse name Liney Mayo.   Thomas parents were Jesse Bailey and Martha Arnold, both parents born in Hawkins County. Harrison Funeral home in charge of arrangements, burial was in Surgoinsville Baptist Cemetery.

*Haze H. Mayo b. 21 September 1856 died 29 Aug 1919. On Certificate of Death Haze died from Bright's disease, M.D. was G. C. Lyons. Mother’s maiden name was Nancy Mayo, reported by Charlie Mayo. Hazel Harrell (Mayo) married Janis (Virginia) Bateman 15 Sept 1877. JP S. Barrett, in Hawkins County, Tennessee.
Virginia Bateman b. August 20, 1854 d. 1908 she was the daughter of William and Ellen Bateman. William Bateman was a painter by trade On Oct 28, 1848 he was paid $6.00 for painting the Yellow Store & Batemans dwelling (Yellow Store Ledger p 114). Haze and Virginia are buried in the Carters Valley Cemetery. Their farm was willed to son Charlie Mayo, it joined this cemetery line which also included the
Carters Valley School in Hawkins County, Tn.

James H. Mayo b. April 4, 1878 married Sallie K. Mayo b. March 6, 1876 d. Aug 16, 1923, They had 3 daughters, and son James Ray b. 1898 d. 1984 Ray married Norma E. Fleanor b. 1907 d. 1991, James Ray and Norma had sons James Ray Jr. b. July 5,
1926, Gene b.1928, Sally b. 1938. After the death of Sally, James H. Mayo married Annie Brooks. Flora daughter of James and Sallie Mayo, married Mack Larkins. Cornia daughter of James and Sallie Mayo married Jack Larmer, this family moved to Pa.
Gertrude daughter of James and Sallie Mayo m. Andy Edens, and moved to Idaho.

Leroy "Roy" Mayo son of Haze and Virginia was b. 25 Sept 1880, d. Feb 13, 1947.  He died same day as his brother Charlie and they had double funeral. Roy married Mary, and had one son Garnie.
Bart S. Mayo, son of Haze and Virginia was born 13 April 1885 died Dec 1, 1955.
Bart married Kate Carr b. March 24, 1888, d July 7, 1934, they had a child, Wallace. After the death of Kate, Bart married Annie Gibbons; they are buried in the Carters Valley Cemetery. Kate Carr Mayo is buried at the New Providence Cemetery.
Effie Mayo b. July 11, 1890 d. 1980's daughter of Haze and Virginia Bateman Mayo, married Charlie Davidson, they had son Bob Davidson.
Charlie Mayo, son of Haze and Virginia Bateman Mayo was b. Dec. 31, 1882 d. Feb 13, 1947. Charlie married Nora Carroll on Jan 1, 1905 she was b. August 31,  1886, d. Aug 29, 1959.
Nora Carroll Mayo was daughter of Charlie W. b 1858 and Matilda (Yates) Carroll b1861, died Oct 15, 1927. Charles William Carroll b 1858 was son of Alexander b 1820 and Mary b 1824. Carlie Carroll and Matilda Yates married Dec 21, 1879 in Hawkins County. Mitilda Yates was the daughter Tilford Yates b 1813 in Va, and Sarah b 1824. Tilford was a shoemaker by trade. They were the parents of the following children: James W. b 1841 mar Margaret, Parmulia b 1843, George W. b 1846, Sarah b 1852 married John S Henderson b 1843, Ferdit T b 1854, Marietta b
1858 and Matilda b 1861 who married Charlie W Carroll.

Hazel Mayo b. July 18, 1907, d. Sept 10, 1961 mar Frank Noe b July 15, 1901 d March 10, 1997. One daughter Mary, two sons; Frank H. Noe killed in action World War 2, and Bill Noe

Christine Mayo b. April 27, 1910, d. April 10, 1979, married James Barrett b Feb 13, 1905, died Oct 27, 1966.

Ransom E. Mayo b. Jan 19, 1913, d. Aug 3, 1993, m. Lena McCullough. b. Dec 6, 1913, d. Sept 25, 1993. Lena was daughter of Billie and Margret McCullough. Lena  McCullough, McCollough, McCullic line listed after Mayo genealogy.

Robert Mayo b. July 25, 1915 d. July 10, 1990, m. Hazel Bombailey.

Earl Mayo b. Jan 25, 1920, m. Madge Robinson. This completes the children of Charlie and Nora Carroll Mayo.
